Seasonal Field Technician: Astoria, Oregon

Responsibilities:The Seasonal Field Technician will assist with the implementation and monitoring of an Avian Predation Management Plan using passive and active dissuasion of Caspian tern nesting in order to reduce predation of juvenile salmonids in the Columbia River Estuary. Primary duties will include: installation and maintenance of passive dissuasion, daily hazing of Caspian terns and other species at select sites, boating, and daily monitoring of regional Caspian tern colonies.
These positions often require working in suboptimal conditions (wet, cold, windy, or hot), with limited and irregular days off, and possibly camping for days at a time. The work may involve crawling on knees, bending over or stooping, and sitting for long periods of time using binoculars. All duties must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and will be required to live and work in close quarters and in isolated settings.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong interest in avian ecology, fisheries conservation and feel comfortable working on small boats. Preference will be given to applicants having work experience conducting wildlife management, seabird behavior studies, and a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science or a related field.

Applicants must possess and maintain a current, valid Driver’s License and be able to pass a background check.

Dates of Employment: April 24 through June 30, 2017.

Salary: $2,300 to $2,500 per month (DOQ), shared housing is provided.

Seasonal Field Technician: Ellensburg

Responsibilities:The Seasonal Field Technician will assist with a fisheries acoustic survey. The employee will assist with the tagging process of juvenile steelhead at a local dam. This position often requires working in suboptimal conditions (wet, cold, windy, or hot), with limited and irregular days off. The work will involve lifting, bending over or stooping, and standing for long periods of time.

Qualifications: Applicant must be able to lift 50 lbs. All duties must be performed with a high degree of quality, uniformity, and timeliness. The employee must work as a team member and will be required work in close quarters.

Dates of Employment: April 26 through May 31, 2017.
